The French Entrepreneurs’ Fund ISAI Invests in Second-Hand Louis Vuitton
In April, we announced that French startup fund, ISAI , officially launched with some 24 million euros. The "French entrepreneurs fund" brings together some of the 60 hottest names in French tech, including PriceMinister 's founder Pierre Kosciusko-Morizet and the former Editor of TechCrunch France , Ouriel Ohayon . InstantLuxe was founded in 2009 and allows individuals and professionals to buy and sell high-end, second-hand goods from brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Bulgari, etc. All items sold on the site are delivered with a certificate of authenticity after being inspected by a network of experts. Iconic pop star, iconic statue -- Lady Gaga was bound to interpret New York City's Lady Liberty at some point. With designer Marc Jacobs, whose clothes she frequently dons via his eponymous collection or his work at the house of Louis Vuitton, Gaga covers this month's V Magazine in a salute to NYC. Hemingway's Great-Granddaughter Stars in Louis Vuitton Safari Campaign

Earlier this year we told you about model Dree Hemingway , 22, daughter of Mariel Hemingway and great-granddaughter of famous author Ernest Hemingway , who's making a name for herself among the fashion crowd. Now the willowy blonde is starring in a luxe new safari -themed ad campaign for Louis Vuitton (above). Reminiscent of Hemingway's African tales such as The Snows of Kilimanjaro , the casting choice is a fitting one as the author is often credited with introducing the Swahili word "safari" into common parlance.

The new Vuitton campaign, highlighting the famed French luxury goods house's handmade travel items, was shot on location in Africa . Photographed by Carter Smith, the ads feature Dree and a handsome young fellow enjoying the dramatic scenery of the African veldt. Items on display include bags, trunk s, journals, watches , blankets, sunglasses , jewelry, clothing and even a few items of vintage Vuitton luggage . The campaign comes on the heels of Dree's selection as the face of Italian fashion house Gianfranco Ferré earlier this year, following appearances for Abercrombie & Fitch and DKNY.

Bono And Ali Hewson Are Latest Vuitton Ad Stars

The latest in the beautiful Louis Vuitton ad campaign shot by Annie Leibovitz features U2 frontman Bono (aka Paul Hewson) and his wife, Ali Hewson. WWD says that this is the first time that Bono has appeared in an ad without his U2 bandmates. It's also the first time that a label other than Vuitton is getting a fashion credit, the pair are wearing their own clothing line, Edun, a line of ethical fashion. Vuitton parent company LVMH owns a 49 percent stake in the company. In the ad, Ali Hewson carries a new handbag that was a join project between Edun and Vuitton and has a special charm that is the French firm's first made-in-Africa product. Proceeds from the bag will go to TechnoServe, a nongovernmental organization that fosters enterprise in the developing world; Conservation Cotton Initiative, which supports sustainable farming in Africa.

The ad shows the pair leaving a plane with a South African landscape as a backdrop and carries the tagline "Every journey began in Africa." They donated their fees to TechnoServe, Conservation Cotton Initiative and Chernobyl Children's Project International.

During Paris Fashion Week, Vuitton and Edun will showcase Africa Rising, a temporary exhibition of contemporary African art to be shown with Edun's spring collection. The Africa Rising exhibition will run October 5 until October 17.

Previous ads have featured Mikhail Gorbachev, Keith Richards, John Glenn, Sally Ride, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Pele and Catherine Denueve among others.

Martin Scorsese & The Rolling Stones Rock Chanel's New Men's Fragrance [video]

Famed French fashion and luxury goods house Chanel has brought on legendary director Martin Scorsese to help promote its new men's fragrance, Bleu de Chanel . Scorcese has made a sexy new commercial for the scent starring actor Gaspard Ulliel with a soundtrack by the Rolling Stones , firmly positioning it as a cologne for the young, cool, rich and beautiful - or those who think all that can be found in a perfume bottle in any case. Marked by notes of citrus , vetiver, pink pepper, grapefruit, dry cedar, labdanum, frankincense, ginger and sandalwood, Chanel says Bleu "embodies that greatness of a man when he chooses to be free". To be specific, it smells "enigmatically seductive", reeking of "bold masculinity" and an "untameable, rebellious spirit." The collaboration follows other high-profile director-fashion label matchups, including David Lynch for Dior, Frank Miller for Gucci and Zoe Cassavetes for Louis Vuitton.

Scorcese Directs For Chanel

Dior has David Lynch in the directorial role for its Lady Blue Shanghai campaign and Chanel has its own famous director and blue-themed movie. Our sister blog Stylelist led us to the short previews of Martin Scorsese's commercial for Chanel's new men's fragrance, Bleu de Chanel. The comparisons continue, like the Dior video this one also gets a little French sex appeal. Dior has Marion Cotillard and in the Scorsese short we get handsome Gaspard Ulliel romancing the camera with his wide blue eyes.

We're definitely on to a trend here. Gucci recently released its own movie for Gucci Guilty starring Evan Rachel Wood and directed by Frank Miller of "Sin City" fame. Stylelist also reports that director Zoé Cassavetes created a short for Louis Vuitton and Sofia Coppola is rumored to have short a new fragrance ad for Dior.

Are Brands Giving Snooki Their Competitor's Bags? (PHOTOS)

Snooki is reportedly a pawn in the hyper-competitive luxury bag market. According to Simon Doonan, luxury fashion brands are supplying the petite Jersey Shore star with their competitors' bags in hopes of cheapening that brand's image. So, for example, Louis Vuitton sends her a Gucci bag thinking that it'll damage Gucci's rep when people see Snookers toting it around. Fashion houses will often send celebrities free goods because they want their wares to be associated with glamorous people. This reversal of that tactic, however, is what Simon calls "unbranding" that "makes total sense." When she first appeared on Jersey Shore, Snooki was spotted carrying... www.celebuzz.com | 8/19/10 7:55 PM

Economy Spurs Knock-Offs of Lesser Known Brands
First the shoppers, then the retailers, and now the counterfeiters. It's official: the recession really is affecting everybody. The economic downturn hasn't exactly hurt the multi-billion dollar knock-off industry but what it has done is change the way counterfeiters do business. The usual victims, high-end retailers like Louis Vuitton , Gucci , and Coach , are being replaced by less expensive luxury brands like Samantha Thavasa , Anya Hindmarch , and Kooba . Smaller labels are appealing to counterfeiters for many reasons: they're easier to sell online, can often be priced higher, and because the designers run smaller operations they're less likely to trigger a lawsuit. One of the most common new tricks is to offer brand name bags at fairly small discounts, i.e. $190 for a $250 bag, on small but well-designed websites. The result is unwitting consumers who think they've found a good bargain on a genuine article and buy, often being none the wiser until it's too late.

Unfortunately there's not a lot that can be done as there will always be crooks out there looking to make a buck (and the internet is notoriously difficult to patrol) so your best bet is to always buy from reputable retailers you trust and to remember: if that bargain looks too good to be true it probably is.

Louis Vuitton Opens at Santa Monica Place

Louis Vuitton opened its 137th North American store and first one on the westside of Los Angeles last week on Friday (August 6th) in the newly renovated Santa Monica Place mall. Located in a prominent corner of the ground floor the design boasts a beautifully sweeping curved glass storefront and hardwood floors. The 4,139 sq ft interior is broken down into three distinct regions: a women's area with a Louis Vuitton "bag bar" along with a leather goods display and accessories spot, an elegant lounge for rare items and women's shoes , and a men's area for shoes, leather goods, accessories, and luggage.

And as if you needed another reason to go check it out it's also Louis Vuitton's first ever LEED-certified eco-friendly store .

Now This Is An Exit!

This is the kind of dramatic bitch exit that used to exist only in the deepest part of Arnetta the Moodsetta's dreams, but now it exists in real life thanks to Steven Slater. Steven has taken "I Quit This Bitch" to brand new theatrical levels! Seriously, Steven Slater is the real bitch Bette Midler was singing to in that song. Bette just didn't know it yet until now.

Picture this. The red velvet curtain goes up and there's Steven Slater, a seasoned Jet Blue flight attending, sitting in his seat on a plane which just landed at JFK. The crew has told passengers to not even think about poking their toes into the aisle to collect their bags until the seat belt light has been turned off. But of course, some tricky bitch who shits on rules slithers out of his seat to get his bag from the overhead compartment. This is Steven's cue to leap out of his chair to tell the dude to sit the hell down. The dude disobeys Steven's authority and curses him out. The plane goes silent because they feel it in the air that Steven is about to give the performance of every diva's lifetime! All spotlights stay on Steven....

The NYDN reports that Steven got onto the intercom and screamed, "To the passenger who called me a motherfucker, fuck you! I've been in the business 28 years. I've had it. That's it." Then Steven grabbed two beers, pushed the emergency exit and slid down to the tarmac to pick up his bag and take the AirTrain to his car. And we all stand up to applaud and throw roses at Steven's feet! That whole scene is what a hair flip looks like in heaven!

But I have a feeling that the NYDN got their facts a little twisted. This is how it really went down. Steven grabbed two bottles of pink champagne, pushed the emergency exit, tossed his head in the air and then slid down the inflatable slide (grabbing his Louis Vuitton bag off the cart along the way) before somersaulting in the air and landing in his bright yellow Mazda Miata. Then Steven slipped on his Dior shades, blasted "Bye Bye Baby" and flipped off all the passengers who were still watching from the plane. Curtain goes down.

Steven was later arrested at his home in Queens. Steven will be charged with 2nd-and 4th-degree criminal mischief, 1st- and 2nd-degree reckless endangerment and criminal trespass in the 3rd degree. Steven faces up to 7 years in prison.

The only thing Steven should be charged with is dramatic theatrics in the first degree! Steven should be sentenced to 7 years on a daytime soap opera where his diva exits will be embraced and rewarded!

But seriously, fuck them! It's Monday! We're all allowed to grab two beers and slide towards the exit on a Monday.

Mido AD1 "All Dial 1" Watch
I was stressing myself out wondering why this watch was called the "All Dial 1," until I realize that in all likelihood, there is no meaning to the name. Ha! You foiled me again Switzerland. What fun life would be if Swiss watch names actually meant something half the time. Perhaps I am wrong? Mido, want to help me out a bit here? Inspired by Mido's watches from the past the AD1 offers some modern areas of interest, with traditional (for Mido), hands, and to an extent the case. What is modern? Well the dial (a bit) and just the way the entire design comes together. In fact, I would venture to say that this design is extremely polarizing. I can see plenty of people checking it out and concluding that it is less than pretty.

The case, which I believe is tapered a bit like a Louis Vuitton Tambour, is just over 38mm wide (medium at best), and steel with a rose gold PVD coating. Case is 100m water resistant and has a sapphire crystal. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2836 automatic movement with a day/date complication. Price for the watch isn't too bad at $950. Let's see who bites.

Google to sell brand name keywords to European markets

Section: Web, Google

Google has announced that starting September 14th, it will allow European markets to bid on brand names as keywords, something it already allows North America, Ireland, and the UK to do. This will allow advertisers to have their ads show up when users search for names such as Nike, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Apple, and other well known brands. Many brand owners tried to block the move, saying it would sellers of fake designer goods to have their ads show up along side results for the real thing, confusing buyers. The European Court of Justice ruled in favor of Google however, saying it had done its part to protect trademarks by allowing brand owners to bid for keywords belonging to third party trademarks. Google says it is committed to fighting counterfeiters and will remove ads for fake designer goods and ban the companies selling them from the AdWords program.

The Fashion Statement: A Case for Roomy Trousers

Reed Krakoff's (Coach president and creative director) new ready-to-wear line this fall featured them. So did Pringle of Scotland. January Jones broke them out for the annual summer Louis Vuitton/Vanity Fair party on Rodeo Drive.

Skinny pants, could your end finally be in sight? Roomy, high-waisted trousers are showing up everywhere.

This isn't the first time roomy trousers have tried to get a jump on the ubiquitous skinny. For a brief moment in 2007, high-waisted wide legged jeans flooded the marketplace. In '08, the wide-legged palazzo had a moment. A year ago, the harem pants made a run for it gaining many headlines and about half as many fans.

What makes this time different? Time will tell.

Fashion is like a pendulum. For every action, there is a reaction. It was always a matter of time before flowing pants nudged skinny off her perch. It usually takes a few tries before the eye gets used to the new look. Even fashion critics who are used to continuous change, are hard to convince. Earlier this year, style.com had this to say on Pringle's slouchy trousers inspired by wading boots: "That's a lot of pant for a body to wear."
