Moto Guzzi V7 Clubman reportedly set for production

As is the case in the automobile world, what's old is suddenly new again. While some homages to the past may be better left right where they are, others are simply due to come back in vogue. Such is the case with the classic cafe racer motorcycle, which some might argue never actually went out of style in the first place. And we totally dig the effective use of simple touches that make Moto Guzzi's V7 Clubman stand out from the rest of the Italian manufacturer's lineup.

Take, for instance, the sloping single-passenger humped saddle and the tiny front windscreen and number plate, which is mimicked on either side of the rear fender. Add in a highly polished fuel tank and an upswept Arrow exhaust system and you've got the perfect modern reinterpretation of a classic street racer. Makes us want to do the ton on our way to the Ace Cafe just looking at it...

That dream may soon be a reality, it seems. According to Motorcycle-USA's monthly Euro Gossip report, the handsome Guzzi is headed for production in October. The supposed additional $1500 over the standard V7 Classic seems reasonable for all those aforementioned upgrades. We've contacted Moto Guzzi for an official word on whether or not the bike will come to the States, but in the meantime feel free to take a look at our high-res image gallery below.

Well-known designers Miguel Galluzzi (who penned the original Ducati Monster and Aprilia RSV4 ) and Pierre Terblanche (who designed the classic Ducati Supermono, 999, Multistrada 620 and 1000 and Hypermotard ) set out to redefine Moto Guzzi, a classic Italian motorcycle marque known these days more for building somewhat stodgy machines instead of anything overtly modern or sporty, with a trio of concepts bikes late last year. We'd say the duo succeeded.

Hell For Leather's Wes Siler got the inside scoop from the two designers, and he's documented it all via an interview and the first studio shots ever taken of the V12 Le Mans, Strada and V12 X. Both concepts are visually interesting, though we find the X particularly stunning with its supermoto-inspired styling and blacked-out details.

Take a look at both bikes in our high-res image gallery below, and check out HFL for more details on the Strada , V12 X and Le Mans .

Moto Guzzi V12 X Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Late last year, Moto Guzzi showed off a trio of concept bikes to point the way forward for the famed Italian marque as it struggles to shed its somewhat stodgy image and attract new buyers. Judging from the effort, which was led by Miguel Galluzzi (he of Ducati Monster and Aprilia RSV4 fame) and Pierre Terblanche (who designed the famed Ducati Supermono, 999, Multistrada 620 and 1000 and Hypermotard ), we think they're on to something big.

The boys from Hell For Leather recently got the chance to sit down with the designing duo and scored both an interview and the first studio shots taken of both the V12 Le Mans and V12 X. We're big fans of both these concepts, though we'd perhaps steal bits of each one and combine them to make the ideal Guzzi. For instance, we prefer the no-nonsense supermoto style and general ethos of the X but think the single-sided swingarm with integral shock and linkage is pretty darn awesome. As is the flyscreen/LED light combo on the Strada.

Take a look at both bikes in our high-res image gallery below, and check out HFL for more details on the Strada , V12 X and Le Mans .

Rumormill: Ducati/Piaggio merger in the works?

Could it be true? The rumormill is running overtime with reports of a potential merger between a pair of our favorite two-wheeled giants: Ducati and Piaggio .

Piaggio has no comment on the matter, refusing to either confirm or deny the supposed Ducati deal. Still, we can't help but run through the what-ifs, assuming there's a shred of truth to this. Perhaps we'll finally see some stability in the U.S. surrounding the many great brands under Piaggio's roof.

Could Piaggio's broad scope of product (currently offered throughout the Vespa , Moto Guzzi and Aprilia lines), coupled with the stable dealer network Ducati has built, be the recipe for a successful challenge to rivals from Japan and beyond? Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

Piaggio's $7.5 Million, 460 mph Other Ride: the P. 180 Avanti II
Traveling to motorcycle launches usually involves the cramped coach cabin of an aged 737, but Ducati provided moto scribes with a rare treat for their 2010 Hypermotard 1100 EVO intro: a Long Beach to Scottsdale flight aboard a Piaggio P. 180 Avanti II. This private plane is manufactured by Piaggio Aero, a division of the same folks responsible for the Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, and Vespa brands. When I boarded the Avanti's leather and wood lined cabin, I was reassured by the fact that Piaggio Aero was founded in 1884, making it one of the world's oldest aircraft manufacturers.

The twin-engine, turboprop-powered plane is an impressive technical achievement, boasting canard wings up front, a fuselage that provides up to 20% of total lift, and propellers aft of the cabin which yield a surprisingly quiet ride. We made the Long Beach, California to Scottsdale, Arizona trip in just over an hour, and could have been even more expedient, had air traffic control allowed us to nudge closer to the plane's 400 knot top speed (which translates to a ground speed of 460 mph.)

That terminal velocity makes Piaggio's 180 mph Aprilia RSV4 Factory look like a bit of a slouch... but when it comes to fuel economy, I'm betting on the Italian superbike.

For more on the Avanti II, go to piaggioaero.com.

Moto Guzzi refines performance cruiser recipe with Griso 8V SE

Moto Guzzi Griso 8V SE - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's unlikely that Moto Guzzi is the first brand you think of when talk turns to Italian motorcycles, but the manufacturer has a long history of producing desirable V-twin-powered machines and still offers a number of interesting models to consider. Chief among them is the latest version of the Griso, seen above.

The most noticeable feature that sets Guzzi's new Griso 8V SE apart from its standard siblings are the classically Italian paint colors: either Tenni green or Rosso Mandello red with a blacked-out powertrain. A nicely-stitched leather seat and wire-spoked wheels round out the visual modifications.

Just as importantly, though, the Griso 8V SE manages to boost torque output by five lb-ft to 85, though horsepower remains steady at 110. That extra power comes courtesy of revised cam profiles and fuel injectors, along with a larger airbox that helps Moto Guzzi's eight-valve Quattrovalvole breathe a bit better. Check out our high-res gallery below and make the jump for the official press release.

Cycle World 2009/2010 International Motorcycle Show Photo Gallery: Something Old, Something New...
The Cycle World International Motorcycle Show is a fairly telling indicator for the state of the bike business, and this year's event presents a curious double-edged sword: on one hand, the show is notably smaller than last year's , or the year before that . There are 9% fewer exhibitors this time (according to the LA Times ), and no official representation from KTM, Kymco, or the Aprilia/Vespa/Moto Guzzi/Piaggio conglomerate.

But on the flip side, this year's display bikes reveal none of the malaise that has hit the market; just look at the wild-as-ever customs or ambitious production machines like the Honda VFR1200F, Ducati Multistrada 1200, and Yamaha YZF450F. The Times also reports that attendance for the first two shows was only down 3.5% this year, and that visitors are spending 20% more time there... which is consistent with my opinion that bike enthusiasts don't grow any less enthusiastic when the economy's in the crapper.

View this 2009/2010 Cycle World International Motorcycle Show Photo Gallery for future dates and highlights from the Long Beach show, and comment if you plan to check out the event this time around.

Moto Guzzi V7 Classic - Click above for high-res image gallery

Every once in a while, you can tell exactly how a motorcycle will ride based solely on the initial walkaround. When the seminal Yamaha VMax hit the scene way back in 1985, one look at its muscular stance, massive V-four and spindly suspenders told you everything you needed to know about its intentions. At the other end of the spectrum, it takes just a quick glance at any modern Vespa to know if its rider is destined to be a mod or a rocker.

This odd ability to instantaneously assess a bike's virtues came again when the Moto Guzzi V7 Classic arrived on our doorstep. As you'd expect, we dove right into the nitty-gritty details as quickly as we could type its name into Google. We dissected the manual and gazed at the pictures. Then we went outside with the key clutched firmly in hand, approached the machine and promptly forgot everything we'd just spent the last few hours reading. With a bike like this, the spec sheet seems largely irrelevant and mundane; things like horsepower and torque figures really don't seem to matter. How can that be? Click past the break to find out.

17th Annual Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance

17th Annual Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance returned to its picturesque setting at Trump National Golf Club this past Sunday and we were fortunate enough to make it out. Thankfully, the recent Southern California wildfires missed this area of Palos Verdes, so the 17th installment of the concours went off without a hitch. Well, it was cloudy all morning, but that hardly dampened everyone's spirits. This classic car gathering is one of our favorites, not only for the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the well manicured golf course setting, but because of the quality of cars on hand. It's like a scaled down Pebble Beach, with several of that show's alumni in attendance.

This year's featured marque was Maserati, but all of the Italian brands were extremely well represented. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Iso, Bizzarrini, De Tomaso and Lancia all had strong fields, as did Italian motorcycles, which were a new class this year. There were even a few Cisitalias, Fiats, Oscas and Siatas on display. On the non-Italian side of things, there were customs, horseless carriages, brass era cars, British luxury cars, American luxury cars and a lot of other stunning vehicles.

Some highlights included the Italian race cars - Maserati Birdcage, Monopostos and 200 SIs, Iso Griffo A3/C, and the legendary Lancia Stratos (a genuine HF team car done up in Alitalia colors). The Moto Guzzi Lodola and Vespa GS160 stood out in the bike field, but it was really nice to see all of the Maserati, Ferrari (not related to Enzo), Moto Guzzi, Ducati and Benelli cycles as well.

Other four-wheeled stunners included the Pinin Farina Series I Cab, ATS 2500, Lancia Flaminia Zagato, Cisitalia Nuvolari, Ital Design Manta, Alfa 1900 CSS, Luigi Chinetti's old Lamborghini Silhouette, '50 Merc, '54 Chrysler and Plymouth Ghias, Rolls Woodie, Vauxhall, Delahaye and Lagonda sports cars, Franklin, Wills and Panhard pre-war cars, and Steve Tillack's display of everything from a barn find and bare bodies to a glorious Ferrari formula car. We've assembled a huge gallery of most of the entrants, many with their information placards in frame so you can track down more details about your favorites.
