Monterey 2010: A century of Indianapolis 500 entrants féted at Pebble Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Racing Indianapolis 500 100th Anniversary at Pebble Beach - Click above for high-res image gallery The 95th running of the Indianapolis 500 this May represented the 100th Anniversary of "The Greatest Spectacle In Racing." The unbroken streak halted a total of five years during our involvement with the two World Wars. It's hard to believe we've had this legendary race for that long, but the centennial was certainly deserving of recognition - and although perhaps a bit incongruous to some, it was celebrated in grand style at no less than the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance . As America's premier race, why not have America's - and perhaps the world's - premier classic car event host the festivities? A large class of past Indy winners and notable contenders gathered in Pebble Beach on Sunday. Take a look at our gallery and you will see most, if not all, of the entrants - many on rare special loan from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum: 1911 Marmon "Wasp" 1920 Peugeot 3 Litre 1928 Miller "Front Drive Special" 1934 Ringling & Henning "Wonder Bread Special" 1938 Maserati 8CTF "Boyle Valve Special" 1950 Kurtis "Cummins Diesel Special" 1953 Kurtis Kraft KK 500B "Bardahl Special" B 1961 Cooper T51 "Kimberly Cooper-Climax Special" 1961 Watson "Bowes Seal Fast Special" 1965 Lotus 38 "Powered by Ford" 1972 McLaren "Sunoco Special" Some incredible cars with the strongest of pedigrees are in there, and the best part of this class was seeing how much things have changed while some things seem to stay the same despite the era. Rumormill: Next Focus RS to get all-wheel drive with electric motors Filed under: Hybrid, Performance, Hatchback, Ford, Rumormill Despite driving only the front wheels, reviewers have heaped praise on the current Ford Focus RS's handling and its ability to put 300 horsepower to the road thanks to some nifty suspension and driveline tricks. However, when the next-generation RS rolls into town (assuming that it becomes a reality) it may well have all-wheel-drive courtesy of an electric motor driving the rear axle. According to Autocar , the proposed car would use a higher output version of the Blue Oval's 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder driving the front wheels and an electric motor at the rear. This would allow for both on-demand all-wheel-drive and electric-only drive at low speeds. If this plan proceeds, it would be Ford's first through-the-road hybrid, although French automaker Peugeot has firm plans to introduce at least two vehicles with a similar configuration in 2011. Other alternatives reportedly being studied by Ford are an even higher output gasoline engine (sans motor assistance), or use of the next-generation power-split hybrid that debuts in 2012. However, both of these options would involve sticking with front-wheel-drive and could be problematic if Ford wants to surpass the output of the current RS. Peugeot finishes analysis of four car Le Mans failure. Conclusion? They drove too fast. Filed under: Motorsports, Peugeot #1 Peugeot 908 powers through the night at Le Mans - Click above for high-res image gallery This year's 24 Hours of Le Mans was shaping up to be a second straight flag-to-flag romp for the Peugeot 908 diesels, right up to the point where they all started dropping like flies. Needless to say, the Peugeot Sport engineers have taken a long, hard look at why all four cars failed to finish - and in the case of three of them, it basically comes down to perfect race conditions leading them to be running too fast. The first car to go out was the #3 entrant that was built up from the tub that won the 2009 race. After two-and-a-half hours of racing, a suspension mounting point separated from the carbon fiber tub as the result of an undetected structural problem. The other three cars all went out later in the race with what turned out to be an identical connecting rod failure. A combination of circumstances led to all of the cars running faster this year and putting increased stress on their engines. Not mentioned by Peugeot in its report is the fact that the new Audi R15+ ran considerably faster in 2010, pushing the Peugeots to the limit. At the same time, cool temperatures and a grippy track, blended with air-to-air intercoolers that didn't clog up as much as they did in the past led to more air going into the combustion chamber. More air means more power and an increased load on the pistons - especially late in the race. No doubt Peugeot will be looking to increase its safety margins as the engineers prepare their all-new 2011 challenger. [Source: Peugeot] Peugeot finishes analysis of four car Le Mans failure. Peugeot to resurrect Talbot brand as channel for cheap cars? Filed under: Europe, Plants/Manufacturing, Marketing/Advertising, Peugeot, Citroën, Rumormill It's certainly possible. According to La Voz de Galicia , the French automaker is currently mulling the creation of a new sub-brand to break into the lower rungs of the inexpensive car market. Rather than go through the hassle of rustling up a whole new name, the company has looked to the past for inspiration. It came up with Talbot - a company that got its start early in the 20th century and puttered to a stop in 1986. The name has a history of rising from the dead. In 1978, Peugeot pulled a similar stunt by bringing the Talbot name back from obscurity after Chrysler axed it a decade prior. During the revival, the brand mostly served as a dumping ground for former Chrysler Europe models. Needless to say, the resurrection didn't last long. But if our Google Translator is to be believed, the most recent zombification of the Talbot moniker will have more to do with funky little entry-level machines than any sort of rebadging exercise. La Voz de Galicia claims that the brand will likely start off with just two models based loosely on existing Peugeot models, which would be manufactured at the Citroën factory in Vigo. Is it possible? Sure. But the rumors could just as easily be smoke and mirrors. Thanks for the tip, Lucian!
