Ford Focus RS vs. Porsche Boxster - Click above to view the video after the jump

When it comes to a German-American face-off, you could do a lot worse than pitting the BMW M3 against Ford's 5.0-liter V8 powered Mustang . How much worse? How about a comparison test between a base Porsche Boxster and Ford's turbocharged, torque-steering Focus RS .

Granted, the rationale for the shoot-out came down to cost. Across the pond both the Boxster and the Focus sticker for about the same amount. But that's about where the similarities end. Almost.

While the Focus channels over 300 horsepower to the front wheels, it also tips the scales 3,200 pounds. Compared to the 2,900-pound, 255-hp, rear-driven Boxster, Ford's hottest hatch comes off as rather portly, although both manage to run to 60 mph in under six seconds.

But beyond the stats and the all-too-important lap time, the real question is how best to spend your sports car money and which vehicle is the most entertaining to drive. For that, you've got to jump .

Spy Shots: 2012 Porsche Boxster wired up outside the 'Ring

2012 Porsche Boxster - Click above for high-res image gallery

As expected, the Spyder is the send-off model for the current generation Porsche Boxster (987), so a new version - rumored to carry the 981 designation - is under development.

Like anything hailing from Stuttgart, any changes to Boxster's chassis and exterior will be minor, with more shapely sheetmetal adorning the outside and a few minor modifications to the suspension, brakes and assorted underbody bits. Naturally, a few interior tweaks are part of the package, but the big news is the possible addition of a four-cylinder powerplant for the 2012 model year.

While the 2.9- and 3.4-liter flat six-cylinder engines will likely carryover with minor bumps in horsepower and torque, there's talk of a four-cylinder Boxster being added to Porsche's line-up just above its oft-rumored entry-level model - a rebirth of the 914 co-developed with Volkswagen and Audi . Additionally, Porsche has confirmed it will begin testing three Boxsters with electric drivetrains next year, but technical details on the EVs have yet to be released.

Initial speculation suggested that the 2012 Boxster could make an appearance at the Paris Motor Show this fall, but the smart money is on a Geneva debut in March.

Musical chairs continues with execs at VW/Porsche

Filed under: Europe, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Porsche, Volkswagen

Volkswagen continues its executive shell game. The company has announced that Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert will take the reigns as its new chief product strategist. If you follow the comings and goings of auto execs, Wolpert's name likely sounds familiar. He's the hardy soul who brought the most successful model in Porsche's history to life: the Cayenne . Wolpert will slide into the void left by Matthais Mueller, who takes over as the new CEO of Porsche.

Stay with us, now - this where things get tricky.

Michael Macht, Porsche's former CEO, will step into Jochem Heizmann's old role as VW production boss. Heizmann, meanwhile, will stay on the company's board as the head honcho over its truck division.

This sort of interbreeding between Volkswagen and Porsche was bound to accelerate once the two seriously joined forces. VW is well on its way toward taking over vehicle manufacturing operations at the sports car company, and in the future, we're likely to see the two share platforms and even engines.

Porsche Panamera Personalization Program

Buying a new Porsche is invariably a costly proposition. But the list price, as anyone who's gone through the order process could tell you, is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg, the options list stretching on for an Autobahn mile with the sky as the limit. The latest example covers the Panamera with a series of add-ons for the well-healed customer.

First up is the Powerkit package for the top-of-the-line Panamera Turbo, which squeezes an extra 40 horsepower and 37 lb-ft of torque from the turbocharged engine for a total 540 and 553. Not enough? Put 'er into Sport Plus mode and it'll boost torque up to 590, completing a 3.9-second sprint to 62 mph and a 190 mph top speed.

There's also a Sport Design Package that upgrades the aerodynamics package and the wheels. All at a cost, of course: $21,730 (over the cost of the Panamera Turbo) for the Powerkit and $4590 for the Sport Design Package, in this case.

Porsche, not Audi, will build sports car platforms for VW

Volkswagen BlueSport Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

There was said to be some tussling going on between Porsche and Audi over which brand would provide the platform for the Volkswagen Group's future sports cars. A report in Automobilwoche declares that Porsche is the winner. No one should be surprised at Porsche, now a Group company, winning such a competition.

The real coup, however, is in what Porsche plans to provide: a Modular Standard Platform that will place the engine directly over the front axle and fit both longitudinal and transverse engine arrangements. The MSB, as it's called, will be put into use for the next Porsche Cayenne and Panamera as well as a future Bentley , and its flexibility could quickly see it spread throughout the Volkswagen portfolio of brands. Group CEO Martin Winterkorn called it an advantage that would put VW "years ahead of the competition." But let's get to the real question: Does this get us any closer to the BlueSport ? Bueller... ?

On another note, the same report states that Porsche has fast-tracked development of the 918 Spyder , with plans to produce 918 of them and have them appearing at the end of 2012, not 2014 as previously reported .

eBay Find of the Day: Porsche-built 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E is the timewarp sleeper of our dreams

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Auctions, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Luxury

1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E - Click above for image gallery

In 1992, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche briefly entered into a love affair that would produce one very special offspring: the Mercedes-Benz 500E. The car was to become the godfather of all super sedans, packing a 5.0-liter V8 with a staggering (for the time) 322 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Bolted to a four-speed automatic gearbox, the engine could scoot the big four-door to 60 mph in a mere 6.1 seconds. Something tells us that those power numbers were a little conservative. But where does Porsche come in to this dance?

Germany's sportscar manufacturer was responsible for working the sheetmetal of the 500E into the shape you see above. Those healthy fender arches were all massaged into place by the gurus at Porsche before the body was shipped off to Mercedes-Benz for paint and final assembly. Once done, the whole kit and caboodle was shipped back to Porsche for final inspection. Needless to say, this was an incredibly limited production vehicle, with the two companies only creating around 500 examples per year.

This particular car has a grand total of 587 miles on the clock, having spent the fair majority of its years tucked away in a museum. Bidding is at $35,200 with the reserve not met and less than 8 hours to go as of writing. Follow the jump for jazz-tastic video walk around and check out pics in the gallery below.

Rumormill: Porsche 911 Speedster bound for Paris Motor Show

Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Paris Motor Show, Porsche, Rumormill

A prototype Porsche Speedster on the 997 platform has been sneaking about here and there for the last two years. According to a report by Dutch daily De Telegraf , Porsche is finally ready to bring it to the masses as a sendoff before the 2012 Porsche 911 arrives next year.

Right now, that appears to mean an nothing more than an appearance at the Paris Motor Show . We'd guess, however, that based on audience reaction it could see limited production, à la the 911 Sport Classic . Or who knows, as with the 993 Porsche Speedster the company might show it off, build only two of them and leave us all hanging. But you wouldn't do that to us again, would you, Porsche?

Porsche 918 Spyder to get more power when it reaches production?

Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Porsche

Porsche 918 Spyder - Click above for high-res image gallery

What could be better than a mid-engine Porsche with a 500-horsepower 3.4-liter V8 and an additional 218 ponies courtesy of a pair of electric motors? More power, obviously. And that's exactly what a report from Autocar alleges is going to take place for the upcoming 918 Spyder . According to the report, Porsche is said to be enlarging the displacement of the gas-swilling engine in order to extract more grunt from the mill.

The Brit pubs goes on to posit that the production 918 Spyder, which was first seen moving under its own power at Pebble Beach, will sport both soft and hard tops along with a somewhat beefier front end in order to provide adequate crash resistance. Also, somewhat predictably, the concept's 22-inch wheels are very likely to be downsized and the side exhausts may be rerouted to the rear when the hybrid supercar hits the market.

Assuming all goes according to schedule, Porsche is said to be planning a run of about 1,200 918 Spyders, each costing over $625,000 (£400,000) when it finally goes on sale sometime around 2014.

Olympic figure skater uses leaf blower to dry Porsche Boxster, burns down mansion instead?

Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Safety, Porsche, Celebrities, Canada, Luxury

Having unintentionally set at least one vehicle aflame inside of a garage ourselves, we know it takes cat-like reflexes and a certain presence of mind to keep from reducing all of your worldly possessions to cinders in that type of situation. It also helps to not try to dry out the interior of your Porsche Boxster with a leaf blower. That's exactly what Olympic figure skater Kurt Browning was allegedly trying to do when his droptop went all toasty. According to The Toronto Star , the city's fire department says that Browning left said leaf blower unattended, the car caught fire and his house went up shortly thereafter.

Browning had attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, but the damage was already done. A total of 80 firefighters and 10 trucks were on hand to attempt to reduce the damage and protect surrounding homes from potential fire. No one was injured in the blaze, but the house is said to have suffered hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. We're guessing the Porsche is a lost cause, too.

Jay Leno's Garage gets private time with Porsche 918 Spyder - Click above to view video after the jump

One of the things we like most about Jay Leno , aside from being a hugely knowledgeable car guy, of course, is his access. Who else would Porsche pick for some private time in a hangar with its forthcoming hybrid supercar, the 918 Spyder , during last week's festivities in Pebble Beach ? Certainly not us. We waited by the phone, but sadly Porsche never rang.

Jay did get the call, however, and in addition to being allowed to place his all-denim outfit within inches of the 918 Spyder, he also got face time with Michael Mauer, Head of Design for Porsche. Jay didn't have total access, however, as Mauer shot down his request to open the hood and view the car's high-tech secret powertrain. Ah, well.

Follow the jump to hang with Leno as he learns more about the 918 Spyder straight from the designer's mouth.

Porsche rolls out new Panamera personalization program, includes 40-hp boost for Turbo

Porsche Panamera Personalization Program - Click above for high-res image gallery

Anyone familiar with Porsche 's options catalog knows that a nearly endless list of custom extras are available for the automaker's entire model range. However, Porsche is now offering something extra special for customers of its new four-door sedan. Dubbed the Porsche Panamera personalization program - try saying that three times fast - the PPPP incorporates styling and performance tweaks, depending on your taste (and budget).

The top-rung Panamera Turbo can now be had with a Powerkit package that uses two new turbochargers and revised engine mapping to offer 40 more horsepower and 37 more pound-feet of torque over the standard Turbo, totaling 540 and 553, respectively. What's more, the Powerkit treatment includes Porsche's Sport Chrono Turbo Package, and if the car is driven in Sport Plus mode, torque output is further increased to 590 lb-ft. That's a whole lot of twist. This Holy Grail of Panameras will sprint to 62 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 190 mph, yet it still manages to keep the Turbo's EPA-rated city/highway fuel economy of 15/23 miles per gallon.

Available on the full Panamera range, however, is the Porsche's new Sport Design Package which includes a unique front fascia with wider air intakes, a new rear underbody apron incorporating a new diffuser and fins, different side skirts and 20-inch Panamera Sport wheels available in a range of colors. It certainly does a lot to beef up the sedan's appearance, and we're quite fond of the overall treatment.

In true Porsche fashion, these upgrades do come at quite a cost. The Panamera Turbo Powerkit retails for $21,730 (or, you know, the cost of a well-equipped Mazda3 ), and the Sport Design collection will set you back an additional $4,590. It's a pretty penny to pay for some added exclusivity, but for people in the Porsche-buying tax bracket, it's probably more affordable than you think. Hit the jump for the full details in Porsche's release and check out the highlights in our high-res gallery below.

To celebrate its diamond anniversary in America, Porsche is inviting fans to share its favorite stories about the brand on an online family tree. Even better if you still have an old Porsche stashed away in a barn or garage somewhere, Porsche wants to hear from you. If you have the oldest car in each of a dozen model categories, Porsche will have it photographed for a special exhibit at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart . One car will be selected for display at the Porsche stand at the Los Angeles Auto Show in December. Head over to www.Porsche60Years.com to submit your story or car.

The Classicist: Made in the Shade - Porsche Design Heritage Collection

Unlike some collections whose famous names reflect only lucrative licensing deals, products bearing the Porsche Design label have a pedigree that's strongly linked to the famed sports car marque. The Porsche Design Studio was established in 1972 by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche , designer of the iconic Porsche 911 and grandson of the founder of the world-renowned German automaker. Since then Porsche Design has become synonymous with innovative luxury products boasting immaculate craftsmanship, state of the art technology and the absolute highest quality materials, all adhering to the same clear functionality of form. While the product line ranges from cell phones to superyachts these days, sunglasses , one of the first items produced and one with the strongest ties to driving, remain the most appealing.

During the '70s and '80s the coveted sunglasses were the shades of choice for the rich and famous who prized elegant, sporty style. Now Porsche Design Eyewear has come out with a new "Heritage Collection" of aviators celebrating this colorful history. Often copied by others, they remind us that the originals haven't been bettered. The new collection is not just a re-issue of the most notable sunglass designs however, but also an update for the 21st century. Iconic styles that went out of production years ago are back with major upgrades in materials with super lightweight, anti-corrosive titanium frames and lightweight shatter-proof polycarbonate lenses with a multi-layered premium anti-reflective coating. Priced from $250-$409, there are four classic styles in the collection in various color combinations, all variations on the iconic aviator shape and all now available from haute online eyewear boutique Eyegoodies .

Porsche 918 Spyder Makes Its Driving Debut [video]
This past Thursday, the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid - which could become the world's most expensive production Porsche - made its driving debut on a closed road in Monterey , California, just days prior to its North American debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. After being shipped over from Germany by private plane, engineers handed the keys of the new 918 Spyder, dubbed the world's first true hybrid supercar, to Porsche AG Design Chief Michael Mauer. The car drove superbly under its own power, which comes from the mid-mounted 3.4 liter V8 engine out of the RS Spyder as well as an all electric mode which powers just the front wheels. That's good news for the 2,000 prospective buyers willing to fork out an estimated $630,000 to get their hands on one.

While we've heard rumblings that Porsche was going to show its hot new 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept here at Pebble Beach , it appeared that the car was only going to be shown to a select few at private events scattered around the Monterey Peninsula during the week.

Well, today at the Pebble Beach Lodge, site of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance , the company surprised us by driving the hybrid supercar up to the concept lawn for all to see - and hear. They did a quick turn around after sitting still for a second and as the V8 rumble died away, the car started moving forward again. A couple of people were taken by surprise as they thought the driver may have forgotten to engage the parking brake, but no, the car had switched over to battery power.

We shot a little video and took a few pics as we pushed through the massive scrum surrounding the car when it finally came to rest. Follow the jump to see the video and click below to see our high-res images.

UPDATE: Porsche has revealed that the 918 Spyder actually made its driving debut a couple days earlier on a closed road in Monterey. The company kept the drive a secret, though produced a nice video of their own that really shows off how the car sounds under its own power. Added after the jump.

Hybrids get great fuel economy and low emissions, but once the likes of Porsche and Ferrari started developing the technology, you knew we were in for a different game altogether, one where battery boost would become a performance advantage, as much for burning rubber as for saving fuel. And where rubber is being burnt, there will be tuners vying to burn even more.

Take the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid, for example. It's hardly the pillar of earth-friendliness, by any means. And this is hardly the first time a tuner has taken a crack at it. But it is the latest, and comes courtesy of Porsche tuning expert SpeedArt . The package includes a 70-horsepower boost to the conventional gasoline-burning V6 for a 450 metric horsepower output and a 0-60 time cut down by half a second to six flat. Not too shabby for a big sport-ute with a V6.

Electric drive modes are essentially unaffected, allowing the Cayenne to operate on battery power alone while putting around town, with a slight increase to fuel consumption and emissions once its performance is put to the test. An electronically-adjustable suspension riding on 22-inch forged wheels and a new exhaust system are also on offer, and a full aero kit is under development. Check it out in the gallery below and the press release after the jump .

Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid by SpeedART

A vehicle like the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid has a bit of a split personality. On the one hand, it's a hybrid, so that means low emissions and fuel consumption. On the other, it's still a Porsche. And where there's a Porsche - hybrid or otherwise - there'll be tuners ready to increase the performance quotient.

The latest comes courtesy of speedART. The Porsche tuning expert has boosted the conventional gasoline-burning V6 by 70 horsepower for a 450hp output and a 0-60 time cut down by half a second to six flat. Not too bad for a hybrid, and not too bad for a Porsche.

Rumormill: Porsche 918 Spyder lapped the 'Ring in 7:20?

Filed under: Convertible, Hybrid, Performance, Porsche, Rumormill

Porsche 918 Spyder concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Porsche 918 Spyder is an impressive vehicle in almost every conceivable way. The stunning, production-approved drop-top should be motivated by something close to the concept's 500-horsepower V8; almost weak by supercar standards but the still-powerful mill is only part of the powertrain story. The 918 concept also featured a pair of 109-hp electric motors powered by a lithium-ion battery capable of EV-only propulsion that theoretically enables the 918 to drive 16 miles on electricity alone. Then there is perhaps the most awesome statistic: the 918's rumored €500,000 ($650,000 in U.S. dollars) price tag.

What could make the 918 still more impressive? How about a 7:20 lap around the famed Nürburgring? That's the word coming out of the Teamspeed forums , where an image quoting the 'Ring time (see it here ) was allegedly used in a presentation by Ferdinand Piëch. If true, the 918 would best 'Ring kings like the Corvette ZR1 and Nissan GT-R . A lap time of 7:20 would even best the time of the last exotic Porsche, the Cerrara GT, by eight seconds.

Such a quick lap isn't out of the realm of possibility, especially since we're talking about a $650,000 Porsche, but we're not inclined to believe it until we see some in-car video. For one, we don't even know if the 918 Spyder has actually been to the 'Ring yet, let alone laid down such quick times. If it had, we would expect our spy photographers to have caught it on film, which they haven't... yet. Second, the forums are also claiming that Piëch once said his hybrid supercar did a simulated lap of the Nürburgring in 7:30, which further adds to the confusion. Finally, the 7:20 lap time could also just be a target for the production 918 Spyder, something not yet achieved but that Porsche hopes the car will do on the other side of its development.

Whatever the case may be, even the mention of being that quick around Germany's Green Hell implies that Porsche is developing the production 918 Spyder to compete like no Porsche has before.

Porsche Panamera by Sportec

If you've got your eye on the new Porsche Panamera , chances are it's the performance you're after, because it certainly isn't the looks. And if you want an extra boost, there's no shortage of aftermarket tuning firms that will be glad to dial it up to 11.

The latest is Sportec , a Swiss tuner intimately familiar with customizing Porsches . Its new kit for the Panamera comes in two stages: For $4,600, Sportec will squeeze output up from 493 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque stock to an impressive 560 hp and 576 lb-ft, dropping 0.3 seconds off the 0-60 time to run it in a lightning fast 3.9.

Not enough? The stage 2 kit upgrades with a variable exhaust system that raises output even further to 575 hp and 598 lb-ft for a 3.8-second sprint to sixty... and a $12k premium.

Last seen turning the Porsche 911 Turbo into the SPR1R , Swiss tuner Sportec has turned its attention to the Panamara Turbo with the creation of two upgrade packages. The stage 1 kit bumps the standard 493 horsepower to 560, and adds 60 more pound-feet of torque for a total of 576. The underhood tweaks translate into a 0-to-62 time of 3.9 seconds, 0.3 quicker than stock. It can be yours for £2,900 ($4,626 U.S.).

The stage 2 kit adds a sport exhaust with remote-controlled butterflies to the stage 1 setup, delivering 575 hp and 598 lb-ft. You drop another 0.1 second off that 0-to-62 time, but it'll cost you more: £7,990 ($12,745 U.S.). Follow the jump for the press release and check out the gallery of photos below.

Porsche with a Plug

The 918 Spyder will be the world's fastest plug-in hybrid.

For years, as Toyota and Honda toiled away at hybrid-electric vehicles, German manufacturers largely ignored electric-drive technology. But times have changed, and last week, Porsche committed to making a production version of what will likely be the world's fastest plug-in hybrid: a rip-roaring two-seat supercar with a top speed of 198 miles per hour and a zero-to-62-mph acceleration of 3.2 seconds.

Porsche Announces Panamera S Hybrid

Keen on getting your hands on a Porsche Panamera , but not so keen on skyrocketing fuel consumption? Then we've got good news for you, because in addition to developing a variety of new electric-drive prototypes for both road and track, Porsche has confirmed the arrival of the Panamera S Hybrid.

Borrowing its gasoline-electric drivetrain from the existing Cayenne S Hybrid sport-utility, the Panamera S Hybrid will be driven by a 329-horsepower 3-liter V6 coupled by a 46hp electric motor. And like its high-riding counterpart, it will be able to operate on electric power alone at low speeds around town. Expect the Panamera S Hybrid to arrive sometime next year.

Report: Porsche reconsidering diesel Cayenne for North America

Filed under: SUV, Porsche, Canada, Diesel, Luxury

2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo - Click above for high-res image gallery

Audi , Mercedes , BMW and VW offer their premium SUVs in diesel flavors, and that's got Porsche rethinking its stance re: the Cayenne . According to a Porsche PR rep in Canada, the American managers are thinking about bringing the oil-burner this way in order to fill that hole. Two years ago, Porsche tested and then confirmed a diesel Cayenne for the American market that would use Audi's 3.0 TDI . It was supposed to arrive early last year; obviously, that never happened.

We drove the Euro-spec diesel Cayenne last year, and walked away thinking it's a "no-brainer for the American market." With the new Cayenne having lost all that weight and increased its performance, a diesel engine would pull even better. And if the numbers stand, with overall diesel-vehicle sales in North America predicted to hit around 250,000 units in 2014, it could be that Porsche thinks it's a no-brainer as well.

1985 Porsche 944 Batmobile Tribute - Click above for high-res image gallery

This author will be the first to admit that he's not exactly overflowing with love for the Porsche 944, but don't expect any amused looks from this camp about seeing this car degraded into a stumpy rendition of Tim Burton's Batmobile . Sadly, that's just what seems to have happened with this particular 1985 944. According to the seller, the car still boasts the stock 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a five-speed manual cog box, so you won't be outpacing baddies anytime soon. A NOS Sniper system has been installed on the car, but thankfully, it's never been used. We're guessing hitting the go-go juice would be a heckuva lot of fun - but probably just once.

A few of the movie car's more outlandish traits have made their way to this poor Porsche, including those wild batwing fins and a pair of replica .223 machine guns that light up for effect. The car does feature the kind of sound system you'd need to drown out the riotous laughter of those in traffic around you, so that's a plus. The seller says that the front fenders need to be finished, and as such, you can get this puppy for a song. Asking price is a mere $6,500. You can check out the full listing here . Thanks for the tip, Kris!

Porsche confirms 2011 launch of Panamera S Hybrid

2010 Porsche Panamera 4S - Click above for high-res image gallery

Buried within Porsche's recent announcement regarding its plans to test three electric Boxsters , the company openly confirmed that the launch of the Panamera S Hybrid is on track for 2011. Though perhaps not as innovative or as those racy electric vehicles, the Panamera S Hybrid still hails from Stuttgart and, therefore, is bound to be one exhilarating ride.

The upcoming Panamera will borrow the hybrid hardware found in the current Cayenne S Hybrid . That means it will sport a 329-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine mated to a 46 hp electric motor. Like the Cayenne S Hybrid, the Panamera's parallel hybrid setup boasts the ability to operate at low speeds under electric power alone . When the production Panamera S Hybrid takes to the streets in 2011, it will become the company's second model to sport a hybrid powertrain, a remarkable achievement considering that few people associate Porsche with fuel efficiency. Follow the jump for more info on Porsche's fuel-saving plans.

Almost as Quick as the Car: Porsche builds 25,000th Panamera

2011 Porsche Panamera - Click above for high-res image gallery

When the Porsche Panamera was introduced in 2009, skeptics panned the sedan as oddly proportioned and thoroughly unattractive. Later, as the media began to test and review the all-new Porsche , skepticism gave way to fanaticism as the Panamera's amazing handling and jaw-dropping powertrains won over even some of its biggest doubters. Less than a year after the vehicle's introduction, Porsche has ample reason to celebrate as the Leipzig factory has just built Panamera number 25,000. That's peanuts for a mass-market automaker, but an incredible feat for a sports car maker that in most years is thrilled to produce 100,000 models globally.

Panamera number 25,000 is Ruby Red and packs a 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 that was added to the lineup back in May. The special Panamera will be delivered to the U.S. market, where to date 5,000 copies of the sedan have been sold. Porsche looks to keep up the Panamera momentum with a hybrid variant that is expected to bow in 2011. Hit the jump to get the details in the release.

Porsche's 911 GT3 pays a visit to Jay Leno's Garage - click above to watch the video

Porsche recently dropped off a new 911 GT3 at Jay Leno's garage where racer Justin Bell picked it up for a bit of a road trip. Before the trip, Leno and Bell discuss their preference for normally aspirated manual transmission Porsches over the more powerful turbos and dual-clutch PDKs.

On his way to Laguna Seca for the spring American Le Mans Series event, Bell finds a perfect little road for his own private hill climb and gushes over the responsiveness of the non-turbo engine and enormous Brembo binders. At Laguna, Bell hooks up with factory pilot Patrick Long to discuss the differences between the Flying Lizard Motorsports 911 he races and the roadgoing GT3 which spawned it. Even within the limits of the rules set out by the ACO, Flying Lizard and Porsche have managed to find a lot of creative ways to extract more speed out of their competition machine. Check out the full video after the jump .

Porsche Panamera touring car is victorious, proves mass is no object [w/video]

N.Technology Porsche Panamera touring car - Click above to watch video after the jump

We're guessing that Porsche had to do some head scratching when it came to figuring out which motorsports arena would best suit its big Panamera . After all, the company prides itself on forging its wares in the fire of competition. Heck, it even managed to find a suitable arena for the high-riding Cayenne in the Trans-Siberia Rally. Fortunately, it didn't take long for the scientists at Stuttgart to locate a racing league that would suit the portly Porsche's talents: The N.Technology team chose to campaign a modified version of the fast four-door in the Italian Supercar series.

The field is made up of other massive bruisers, complete with front-mounted V8 power plants. On any given race day, you can easily see a Chrysler 300C tango with a Maserati Quattroporte - something that few other race leagues on the planet can boast. Evidently, the big Panamera is off to a good start - the car managed to take the checkered flag on its very first outing. We haven't been able to lay our hands on any footage of the N.Technology car dishing out heaping spoonfuls of hurt to the rest of the field, but we have found a quick clip of last year's season for a little taste of incredibly compelling action. Hit the jump to see for yourself.

Rumormill: 2012 Porsche Cayman Clubsport headed for LA Auto Show

2010 Porsche Cayman S - Click above for high-res image gallery

According to Porsche enthusiast site Planet-9.com , a hardcore version of the Cayman , dubbed CS or Clubsport, will be shown at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show in December. This isn't the first time we've heard rumblings of a lighter, more powerful Cayman, but now that Porsche has successfully launched the Boxster Spyder , it's only fitting that the same sort of package be offered on its harder-core hardtop sister.

Expect the Clubsport to produce around 333 horsepower from its 3.4-liter flat-six, an increase of 13 hp over the Cayman S. From there, lightweight 19-inch wheels will be standard, as will fabric door pulls, aluminum body components and a slightly revised front fascia that we've seen on the Boxster Spyder. Obviously, the real goal with a Clubsport model is lightness, and Planet-9 reports that the CS should be about 162 to 184 pounds lighter than the stock Cayman S.

If the LA Auto Show reveal stands true, the Cayman CS should be hitting the road sometime in 2011 as a 2012 model, priced from around $66,300. Fingers crossed, everyone.
